CGI is run on a voluntary basis by the CGI Council, a small group of people from geological organisations around the world.

CGI would like to have representatives in every country in the world and membership is open to all whose nations and organisations are part of International Union of Geological Sciences. There are currently 229 members located in 63 countries.
