Kristine Asch
Kristine Asch is head of the National and International Maps and GIS Section at the BGR. Since 1995 she has led the IGME5000 project – a multi-national initiative to create a harmonised geological map and digital geographic information system for Europe and adjacent areas. The project has required the development of a nation by nation understanding of the geology of the whole of the continent, the application of expertise in digital information systems and not least the creation and maintenance of an international network of geoscientific contacts. She is the author of the resulting 1:5 Million International Geological Map of Europe and Adjacent Areas, which was published by BGR in November 2005.
The experience of managing the IGME5000 has also provided a practical appreciation of the status of geological mapping and techniques across European geological surveys and research institutes and, in particular, an acute awareness of the issues of standardisation associated with any attempt to harmonise geological information.
Thus, Kristine is Chair of Commission for the Geological Map of the World Working Group on Digital Standards (DIMAS) and President of the CGMW Subcommission for Europe.
In Autumn 2005 she joined the Advisory Board of the German Society for Geosciences (DGG), being an enthusiastic supporter of the recent re-unification of the DGG (East and West).
Prior to 1995 Kristine worked in the field of environmental geology and applied geosciences and in particular on waste disposal site selection. Following this work she was asked to compile and edit the publication 'GIS in Geosciences and the Environment' (Springer, Heidelberg, 2000). More recently she has contributed to the German National Atlas (Asch, K. et al 2003): Die Geologie von Deutschland: ein Flickenteppich) and applied her geoscience and information systems expertise to international assignments in Namibia and China.
Kristine is a geologist by training and graduated from the Freie Universität Berlin, where she specialised in geochemistry and petrology. In 2003 she completed her PhD and a book based on her thesis - '1:5 000 000 International Geological Map of Europe and Adjacent Areas: Development and Implementation of a GIS enabled Concept' (Schweizerbart Verlag) has recently been published.
