Bruce Simons

Bruce Simons is a Senior Information Geoscientist with GeoScience Victoria. Since taking on this role in 2003, he has been designing information management systems for geoscientific data. This has involved assessing the geological and mineral mapping requirements and designing and specifying information models to meet these requirements. This work has naturally led to international collaborative work with the North American Data Model and the subsequent CGI sponsored GeoSciML exchange model, as well as the Australian Mineral Occurences information model.

Before moving into geoinformatics, Bruce was a Senior Geophysicist with GeoScience Victoria (then the Geological Survey of Victoria) and, between 1982 and 1990, the Northern Territory Geological Survey. In both organisations this involved not only supervising or carrying out geophysical surveys and interpretting the results, but aimed to get take-up of the use of geophysical data by field geologists. This required embedding geophysicists into the geological mapping programmes, to the extent they were often in the field together. This close working relationship between field geologists and geophysicists has now progressed to the point in Victoria where a separate "Geophysics Sections" is no longer warranted.

Bruce is a graduate of the Australian National University, and worked as a consultant gephysicist prior to joining the Northern Territory Geologcial Survey. He is past Chair of the GeoSciML Model Design Task Group, and currently employed 50% by AuScope to promote and facilitate the uptake of grid technologies in the Australian geoscience community.
