Procedure for Applying to be a CGI Council Member

Summary of Application/Election Process

The term for CGI council member is four years. The next four year term will start at CGI General Assembly at International Geological Congress in Oslo (August 2008). Applications to be a council member for the 2008-2012 term will be open from 4 to 31 January 2008. Following the review of applications, CGI Council will contact successful applicants and hold an election that will be completed well in advance of the IGC to elect the Council Members. The elections results will reflect the geographical requirement that a minimum of one, and a maximum of four candidates, be selected from each of the five identified geographic regions of the globe. This will ensure that all five identified regions of the world are represented on Council.

Council Member Requirements

  1. Applicant must be CGI members as of 15 December 2007;
  2. Applicants must have substantial expertise in the management and dissemination of digital geoscience data in corporate environment;
  3. Applicants must be able to communicate orally in English and have experience as participants in international collaborative team environments;
  4. Applicants must make a commitment make every effort to attend the annual meeting of the CGI Council;
  5. Existing CGI council members may apply for a second term. A maximum of two consecutive terms on Council are allowed.

Application Process

Members wishing to stand for election for Council must prepare and email to CGI-elections@bgs.ac.uk a concise letter of application (in English) outlining:-

  1. That they meet each of the five application requirements;
  2. Their expertise and experience relative to the CGI mandate and activities;
  3. The region(s) they work in and have experience (Africa, Asia & Oceania, North America, Latin & South America, Europe - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal:Geography);
  4. Their past and current leadership and participation in collaborative international, regional, or specialist groups relevant to the mandate and operation of CGI;
  5. The source of funding for travel expenses to attend CGI meetings;
  6. Full contact information including employer, phone, fax and email addresses.

Review of Applicants by CGI Council

The departing CGI Council will review the applications based on the criteria outlined above and select a maximum of 30 applicants to stand for election for the 12 CGI Council positions. A principal objective of the selection process will be to identify a group of applicants to stand for election having diverse and complementary expertise and regional affiliation. In the case of council members standing for re-election, their contribution and meeting attendance during the current term will be amongst the factors considered.
